As a member of the Riding for the Disabled Association national charity, we offer riding lessons for disabled children and adults and are based at Cheltenham racecourse. We have been in operation for over 40 years in various locations in the Cheltenham area.
We have over 200 riders supported by around 150 volunteers every week throughout term time, which equates to some 7000 lessons per year. All the riders are physically disabled or have learning difficulties/special needs and all receive positive help and a real boost to their confidence during their time with the group. They take part in many different activities depending on their ability. We try and encourage the riders to try new things and enjoy their experience riding a pony.
As we have an indoor and outdoor school there is always riding whatever the weather. We are fortunate to be in such a great location at the racecourse so we can also take the riders out on hacks (no road work) when the weather is good.
We have three principal objectives:
•Developing and supporting opportunities for therapy
•Developing and supporting opportunities for achievement
•Enabling physical activity and enjoyment
We receive no external financial support and rely totally on our own fund raising activities and the fundraising of our volunteers. Our operating costs are around £100,000 per year which includes £2,000 per pony per annum (we currently have 12 ponies) for vet’s fees, food and shoes.
